    Job Description

We are looking for a talented and motivated Lead Frontend Developer to join our SaaS startup full time.

You'll be directly impacting the customer experience through the design and implementation of new functionality in our web software. You'll work as part of a small but rapidly growing team - very much entering on the ground floor with opportunities for share ownership. You'll collaborate with other developers to write the best code for the project, while meeting the requirements of customers.

    Who are we

Vippy - www.vippy.tech - a feasibility & analytics platform for the next generation of energy projects.

    Why we exist

Renewable energy is transforming the energy system faster than ever imagined. But not fast enough. To get on track for net-zero carbon, we need to deploy on average four times as much wind and solar as installed in 2020 every year between now and 2030 AND 28 times as many batteries. (Source: BNEF)

    The problem

Investment is being blocked by the inability to quickly prequalify projects and then support them from feasibility through to operation.

Today's renewables and battery projects are more complex than ever to assess, due to increasingly dynamic markets, increasingly sophisticated control technologies and increasing diversity of commercial models. Current assessment methods are outdated - either relying on self-built spreadsheets, expensive consultants, or clunky software. The result - project assessment that is slow, expensive and often inaccurate or missing key value streams.

    The solution

Enter Vippy, a feasibility & analytics platform for the next generation of energy projects. Designed for projects at any scale - from grid-scale solar and batteries, through to residential VPPs. Vippy makes project feasibility easy, fast and accurate - saving project developers time, money, and avoiding suboptimal investment decisions.

To provide this product we are developing a software stack that spans frontend data visualisation through cloud computation orchestration and mathematical optimisation. As our product is new there is a great deal of creativity and novelty demanded from the development team.

    Where's the job?

We are hiring from anywhere in Australia and expect you'll likely work remote. Our team is currently based in Hobart and Melbourne/Geelong. Being in one of these locations is a plus, but not at all a requirement.

    What you’ll do:

    • Develop and improve our frontend web application, built using Vue and Nuxt
    • Integrate with our backend REST API
    • Integrate with external APIs such as email services and payment providers
    • Inform the development of our backend API
    • Actively work to develop your understanding of the Australian energy markets
    • Strive for a CI/CD workflow, building and deploying in an automated fashion
    • Take ownership of requirements, balancing the needs of customers, product managers, and developers
    • Engage with the open source community and contribute upstream improvements where appropriate
    • Discover, learn, and integrate new technologies into applications to speed up system development or offer cutting edge services to our customers
    • Take part in design and progress meetings
    • Maintain and support systems once they’re up and running
    • Participate in stand-ups, sprint planning, and demos with co-workers and customers
    • Contribute to the creation of a new software development team
    • Make appropriate use of tools and processes such as git, automated tests, linters, and code reviews to maintain correctness, maintainability, and auditability of the software.
    • Mentor junior developers on the technical team

    Our stack

This is the stack you’ll be working with day to day. We don’t expect you to be an expert in all of these from the first day, but over your first couple of months of working with us you will come up to speed on these.

    • Nuxt
    • Vue 2
    • Netlify
    • Cloudfront & AWS CDK
    • Github Actions
    • Figma

Our backend is hosted in AWS and is built on Python, PostgreSQL and FastAPI.

On your first day, we'll expect you to have:

    • A proven record taking the lead on frontend projects
    • Strong experience with Nuxt
    • Strong experience with git
    • Experience with continuous integration
    • Experience integrating the frontend with third party services
    • Experience with automated testing on the frontend
    • Experience mentoring junior developers

It's great, but not required if you have:

    • Knowledge of Australian energy systems (such as wholesale and FCAS markets) and an understanding of general energy concepts such as kW vs kWh
    • Experience with large scale single page web applications
    • Experience with Python, numpy, pandas and relational databases
    • Experience with infrastructure as code

    Salary & Benefits: $90k - $120k p.a. (dependent on experience)

Employee stock options will be available from early next year

    How to Apply:

Send your resume, cover letter and portfolio (eg. GitHub repositories of work that you can showcase) to mags@vippy.tech.

We will review your application, and within 2 weeks selected candidates will be invited to undertake a technical assessment.

Following that, we’ll schedule a video interview or two, and if it looks like we’re a match you’ll be welcomed on board.
