Academia and Industry in STEM: Transitions and Collaborations

As industry collaboration and transition is becoming a focus in academia in the Life Sciences we will be exploring these avenues in an evening of panelist discussion. Learn about how researchers are entering into new roles in academia/industry or start-ups through transition and how researchers have forged collaborations with industry partners. Hear about skills for transitioning careers between academia and industry; initiating, strengthening and maintaining collaborations between fields and the challenges and benefits of start up tech.

The evening will begin with an initial 10 minute presentation from each of the panelists based on career history, main influences, key factors in engagement with industry and the challenges and rewards of entering start up and commercialisation.

Panelists:

Prof Bernd Rehm is Professor of Biotechnology and Director of the Centre for Cell Factories and Biopolymers at Griffith University. His research aims to develop innovative functional materials and technologies that provide solutions for global health and environmental challenges. He harnesses the capacity of biological systems to synthesise and assemble biologically active materials by applying bioengineering, synthetic biology and biotechnological approaches.

Rebecca McIntosh has a Bachelor of Business majoring in Communications and a Master of Arts in Digital Media and has been employed in the commercial, nfp, government and tertiary sectors both in Australia and Europe.  She has been a Career Advisor at UQ providing one-on-one career guidance and job strategy advice to undergraduates through to post-docs. She was then accepted into ilab Accelerator's Germinate program to build a startup childcare wait-listing app & received the Brisbane City Council Budding Entrepreneur Award.

Laure Martine is a Senior Scientist and R&D Program Manager at Ellume, a health technology company developing and manufacturing real-time diagnostics for doctors and consumers. She is working on development of a rapid Influenza A and B test for point-of-care use and is responsible for coordinating assay development alongside fluorescent reader technology, mechanical design and software development.

Prof Avril Robertson is Biotechnology Program Director at the School of Chemistry and Molecular Biosciences, University of Queensland. She is also “UQ Women Create Change Ambassador” for the Science in Australia Gender Equity Pilot of Athena SWAN.
