ABC celebrity scientist and showman Joel Gilmore will be our Master of Ceremonies as we introduce you to the cream of Queensland’s women in science and technology for 2020.

We have record entries this year with more than 240 applicants vying for top honours in 14 categories – including new innovation and regional awards.

Australia’s Chief Defence Scientist Professor Tanya Monro is our pre-eminent keynote and will share her views on creativity, innovation and the opportunities in cross-sector collaboration ... while sharing her secrets for managing one of Australia’s biggest science jobs, juggling three children, playing the cello and her love of science fiction.

Dr Joel Gilmore is a physicist and energy expert, helping industry and government on transitioning Australia to a low emissions future.  He's a passionate science communicator and performer, including co-host of Food Lab on SBS where he talks about the science and technology of cooking.  In his spare time, he teaches swing dancing, learns musical instruments and travels the world when he can - 54 countries so far!

Australia's Chief Defence Scientist

Professor Tanya Monro FAA FTSE FOSA FAIP is the first woman appointed as Australia’s Chief Defence Scientist – a role she has held since March 2019.

Graduating with a PhD in physics from The University of Sydney, in 1988, she received the Bragg Gold Medal for the best Physics PhD in Australia. Her world-class research is in the field of photonics, with a focus on sensing, lasers and new classes of optical fibres.

Professor Monro is a member of the Board of the CSIRO.

She was previously Deputy Vice Chancellor Research and Innovation and an ARC Georgina Sweet Laureate Fellow at the University of South Australia, inaugural Director of the Institute for Photonics and Advanced Sensing and the ARC Centre of Excellence for Nanoscale Bio Photonics.

In 2000, Professor Monro received a Royal Society University Research Fellowship with the Optoelectronics Research Centre, at the University of Southampton UK, and the inaugural Bragg Fellowship of the Royal Institution of Australia (RiAus).She is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science, the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, the Optical Society of America and the Australian Institute of Physics.

Her awards include the Prime Minister's Malcolm McIntosh Prize for Physical Scientist of the Year (2008), South Australian Scientist of the Year (2010), South Australia's Australian of the Year (2011), and the Eureka Prize for Excellence in Interdisciplinary Scientific Research (2015) and she is the 2019 SA winner of the Australian Award for Excellence in Women's Leadership.
